The Mage talent tree in WoW Forever combines Arcane, Fire, and Frost into a single 54-node tree, tied with Priest for the largest tree in the beta data, and Orcs can now train as Mages for the first time. This guide reads the beta tree as of build 1.60.1.69893 and covers reasonable builds for leveling, group content, PvP, rotation, and race choice.
What changed for the class in Forever
The Mage now trains from one 54-node tree instead of three separate Arcane, Fire, and Frost trees, confirmed directly by the beta data. Blizzard's panel recap describes new race and class combinations as part of the class pass, and Orc Mage is the concrete result here — the Horde previously had no dedicated arcane caster class, and Forever closes that gap directly. The Alliance-side Skyborne can also become a Mage, per Blizzard's recap. As of beta build 1.60.1.69893, Forever also unifies hit rating and critical strike rating from gear and lets periodic effects crit, which touches talent #105794 (Ignite) directly, since Ignite is itself a periodic burn generated by a Fire critical strike.
Talent tree overview
As of beta build 1.60.1.69893, the tree has 54 nodes across seven rows. The left column is Arcane, running through talent #105810 (Arcane Concentration, 5 ranks) and talent #105806 (Arcane Blast, 1 rank) up to the capstone talent #105798 (Arcane Power, 1 rank, requires Presence of Mind). The middle column is Fire, running through talent #105794 (Ignite, 5 ranks) and talent #105790 (Pyroblast, 1 rank) up to the capstone talent #105781 (Combustion, 1 rank, requires Critical Mass). The right column is Frost, running through talent #105779 (Improved Frostbolt, 5 ranks) and talent #105767 (Ice Lance, 1 rank) up to the capstone talent #105762 (Ice Barrier, 1 rank, requires Cold Snap).
| Column | Identity | Row-6 gate | Capstone (row 7) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Left | Arcane | Presence of Mind | Arcane Power |
| Middle | Fire | Critical Mass | Combustion |
| Right | Frost | Cold Snap | Ice Barrier |
Leveling build
A reasonable leveling build as of beta build 1.60.1.69893 leans Frost, since crowd control and survivability matter more solo than raw burst does. Improved Frostbolt (Improved Frostbolt, 5 ranks) shortens the cast time of your main damage spell, Improved Frost Nova (Improved Frost Nova, 2 ranks) shortens the cooldown on your root for kiting, and Frostbite (Frostbite, 3 ranks) gives your Chill effects a chance to freeze a target in place outright. Ice Block (Ice Block, 1 rank) is a strong defensive tool once you can spare the point, letting you shrug off a bad pull entirely rather than dying to it.
Dungeon and raid builds
A Fire damage build for raids takes talent #105794 (Ignite, 5 ranks) for the burning effect on Fire crits, talent #105784 (Critical Mass, 3 ranks) for more of those crits to land, and talent #105786 (Hot Streak, 1 rank, requires Pyroblast) to speed up your hardest-hitting cast after consecutive crits, capped by talent #105781 (Combustion) for a burst window built entirely around chaining Fire crits.
A Frost or Arcane build for dungeons instead prioritizes talent #105768 (Shatter, 3 ranks) for guaranteed crits against Frozen targets, pairing naturally with talent #105764 (Fingers of Frost, 2 ranks, requires Ice Lance) to create Frozen procs on demand, or leans into talent #105799 (Arcane Instability, 3 ranks) for flat Arcane damage and crit. The beta data does not indicate which school performs best in current raid content, so this is a build choice rather than a proven ranking.
PvP build
Improved Frost Nova (Improved Frost Nova) and Frostbite (Frostbite) together make root-and-kite a repeatable PvP pattern rather than a one-time opener. Ice Block (Ice Block) is one of the strongest defensive cooldowns available to any class, removing you from incoming damage entirely for its duration. Presence of Mind (Presence of Mind, 1 rank) turns your next cast instant, useful for a guaranteed Pyroblast or Polymorph-adjacent burst through an interrupt window, and Blast Wave (Blast Wave, 1 rank) both damages and slows everything around you at once, a strong answer to being trained by multiple melee attackers.
Rotation and priorities
Classic Mage rotations, carried over from Classic Era, are built around a single dominant spell per school: Fire alternates Fireball with Scorch or Fire Blast weaving, Frost leans on Frostbolt spam with Ice Lance during Fingers of Frost or Shatter windows, and Arcane spends Mana efficiency against burst, using Arcane Blast stacking when Mana allows and Arcane Missiles otherwise. AoE situations bring in Blizzard, Flamestrike, or Arcane Explosion depending on spec.
What Forever changes: with periodic damage able to crit and hit and crit rating unified, Ignite (Ignite)'s burn — already generated by a Fire crit — draws from the same crit stat as your direct-damage priority instead of a separately tracked spell crit stat, which simplifies gearing a Fire Mage compared to Classic Era itemization. Fingers of Frost (Fingers of Frost) and Shatter (Shatter) both remain priorities for landing guaranteed crits, but the unified stat means less need to chase spell crit specifically over spell hit the way a Classic guide would recommend.
Best races for the class
Orc Mage is one of the six new race and class combinations Blizzard announced for Forever, and it is the headline change for this class: Orcs had no Mage option before Forever. The Alliance-side Skyborne can also become a Mage, while Human and Gnome remain the class's original Alliance options.
| Race | Faction | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Orc | Horde | New in Forever; first time Orcs can be Mages |
| Skyborne | Alliance | New race in Forever; Alliance-side Skyborne "pursue the arcane legacy of their ancestors and gain access to the Mage class" per Blizzard's recap |
| Human | Alliance | Original Mage race, carried over from Classic Era |
| Gnome | Alliance | Original Mage race, carried over from Classic Era; Expansive Mind adds Intellect for a bigger Mana pool |
Blizzard has not yet detailed Orc-specific racial adjustments for Mage, so as of beta build 1.60.1.69893 the faction-access change itself is the reason to consider it, not a proven racial edge.
