My road to the cap, and the one dungeon I nearly skipped by mistake

Ironforge, early morning, and I am standing at the entrance to Hall of Thanes wondering why the dwarves look so nervous about their own burial chamber. Turns out Dark Iron infiltrators and some restless undead have been stirring things up down there, and that whole stretch between level thirteen and eighteen ended up being one of my favorite early memories, all torchlight and old stone and the sense that something sacred had been disturbed.

From there I drifted toward the Ruins of Lordaeron, right above Undercity, and that one genuinely unsettled me in a good way, a nameless necromancer apparently plotting another attack on the Forsaken while I tiptoed through Scourge-infested ruins that used to be a proud capital. I got attached to that questline fast, the mood alone carried me through a few deaths I probably should not admit to.

Where I think I would do things differently next time is City of Dalaran. I know it is beloved by plenty of people, the nonlinear climb from sewer tunnels up into arcane-ravaged streets is clever on paper, but I kept getting turned around and backtracking through the same corridors, and by the end I was more frustrated than curious. Maybe I just rushed it at the wrong level and missed the point.

Later on the Drowned City off the Stranglethorn coast completely won me back over, a sunken troll city full of naga and makrura, just a fantastic bit of zone design to wander through slowly.

Has anyone else bounced off Dalaran the way I did, or did I just play it wrong?

The bit about getting turned around in City of Dalaran is interesting, but honestly that is outside what I can speak to well. I live and breathe guild logistics, not dungeon layouts, so I will not pretend I have a fix for the navigation frustration itself.

What I can say is that for a group run, a nonlinear layout like that one is exactly the kind of place where a quick plan beforehand saves a lot of backtracking. Before you zone in, agree on:

    • who is leading and calling the route, so the group is not splitting opinions mid-dungeon
    • a rough sense of which section you are clearing first, sewer tunnels or the upper streets
    • a loot rule settled in advance, so a confusing run does not also turn into an argument over drops

A dungeon that frustrates one person solo can feel completely different with a group that already knows where it is going. If you run it again, maybe pull together people who have already cleared it and let them lead the route. Anyone here cleared City of Dalaran recently and willing to share how they split up the two halves?
