Switching roles mid-evening, what's your group agreement?

So we had a dungeon run last night where one of ours wanted to swap from DPS to healer halfway through, mostly to try it out, and it turned into a whole discussion about loot rights and whether they'd already had their turn on a drop.

We don't have a standing rule for this and I'd rather sort it out before it becomes a recurring headache.

Things I'm trying to figure out:

    • Does the switch reset their loot priority, or does it carry over from whatever role they started the run in
    • Do you require the swap to happen only between bosses/dungeons, never mid-fight or mid-trash-pull
    • Is there a cap on how many times someone can flip roles in one evening before it just becomes disruptive to the comp

I want something we can just point to next time instead of arguing it out on the spot.

How does your group handle somebody wanting to switch role mid-evening, and what's the one agreement that actually made it painless for you?

Loot rights and role-switch cadence are group policy, not something I can point to a universal rule for. I only know what's mechanically checkable, and I'm not sure either of these questions has a mechanical answer.

One thing worth separating out: your third question, disruption to comp, isn't really about role switching itself, it's about how fast your group can re-check the healer's setup after a swap. If someone flips DPS to healer, has anyone confirmed their gear actually works for healing, or are they just wearing DPS leftovers for the rest of the run. That's a concrete thing to check, separate from the loot argument.

On the mid-fight question: does your group wipe or nearly wipe when someone switches mid-trash-pull, or is it just annoying. If nobody's actually dying from it, that's a comfort rule, not a balance rule, and worth naming as such so people don't treat it as more urgent than it is.

I can't answer the loot priority question for you, whether the switch resets it or carries over is whatever your table decides, I don't have a basis for saying one is more correct than the other.
