Spirit works differently from Mana in Path of Exile 2: you reserve it for persistent skills, so it works as a budget. This guide explains what that budget pays for, where it comes from, and where players waste it. GameNavigator is an independent guide site and not affiliated with the developer.

What Spirit is

Maxroll describes Spirit as a resource "which you reserve to enable the effects of persistent Skills." It also says Spirit "acts as a limiter on how many of these permanent effects you can activate at a time."

If you played Path of Exile 1, the idea is familiar: there, such effects reserved Mana. Maxroll says the developers changed this for the sequel "to prevent players from optimizing their Mana around reservations." Spirit separates the two jobs, so Mana is for casting and Spirit is for permanent upkeep.

What reserves Spirit

Based on the guides we read, three families of skills draw on the pool.

  • Buffs and auras. These take the place of the old Mana reservation. Maxroll lists Arctic Armour at 30 Spirit as an example.
  • Permanent minions. Maxroll states that temporary minions have no Spirit requirement, while permanent ones do. Every permanent minion therefore adds pressure on the pool.
  • Meta gems. Maxroll notes that these reserve Spirit when activated. The official 0.3.0 patch notes, for example, said of the Cast on Elemental Ailment gem at that patch that it "requires 100 Spirit."

Other effects use it too. The same patch notes state that with 0.3.0 the Ancestral Bond keystone made totems reserve 75 Spirit each (previously 100), and that the Spirit cost of Spectres was adjusted. Costs like these are balance values and move with patches, so check the gem or passive text in your own game instead of memorizing a number.

Where Spirit comes from

Maxroll, in a guide last updated in September 2025, says you can get a total of 100 Spirit from killing bosses and progressing through the Acts. Poe Vault, writing after Cruel difficulty was removed, reports that "the last +40 Spirit now comes from an Interlude boss fight, instead of Cruel." The item database poe2db agrees for the current patch: in Kriar Village, an Interlude area, the boss Lythara, the Wayward Spear guards the Gemcrust Skull, which grants +40 to maximum Spirit. The official 0.3.0 notes confirm that Cruel difficulty was removed, which is why older guides can disagree.

Gear. Maxroll says body armours, amulets and sceptres can grant Spirit. Maxroll is explicit that you cannot dual wield two sceptres to stack their Spirit. Shacknews adds that "some items also have a built-in Spirit value in their profiles."

Passive tree. Maxroll names the Profane Commander notable as a way to raise your Spirit. It also names Lord of Horrors and Easy Going as notables that reduce what your minions reserve. In the current wording on poe2db, Easy Going is narrower than that: it gives "25% increased Reservation Efficiency of Companion Skills", so it helps companions, not every minion. Shacknews, writing in December 2024, mentions an additional Spirit node for the Witch's Infernalist ascendancy. That node is Beidat's Will, and it has a price: it "reserves 25% of Life" and grants "+1 to Maximum Spirit per 25 Maximum Life". As ever, tree layouts change, so verify in the current tree.

Common mistakes

  1. Over-committing. Adding one more aura or permanent minion is easy until your Spirit runs out. Count your total before you commit to a setup.
  2. Weapon swap surprises. Maxroll warns that if different weapon sets give different amounts of Spirit, "you may find yourself unable to use all of your reservations."
  3. Expecting two sceptres to double up. They do not.
  4. Overestimating the free part of sceptre skills. Maxroll says the first two Skeletal Warriors from a sceptre cost no Spirit. Read the skill text before assuming a minion is free.
  5. Trusting old numbers. Many Spirit guides date from the first months of Early Access. Costs, rewards and tree nodes have been rebalanced since, so use any number here as an example.

A simple routine

After each campaign boss and before each gear change, open your skill panel and add up the reserved Spirit. Compare it with the pool shown on your character. If you are short, drop the least valuable persistent skill first, then look for Spirit on body armour, amulet or sceptre, and only then consider passive points.
